10 Best Crime Documentaries on Netflix UK

  1. The Thin Blue Line Rating: 8/10 – ‎18,996 votes A true classic of the true crime genre and a seminal work in much of what was to follow. Unlike Making a Murderer this features a case that was, indeed, a true miscarriage of justice & one that in no small part because of the success of this film was ultimately exposed & led to the innocent party being exonerated.

The Thin Blue Line is an unmissable true crime documentary.
  2. Making a Murderer Rating: 8.7/10 – ‎66,311 votes Incredible story but loses out on a higher place because its somewhat of a fraud in that the documentary is made almost entirely from the convicted killer’s perspective or side at least and simply skips over the most damning evidence against him which makes finding this out afterwards all the more frustrating.

Making a Murderer was an internet era smash hit but was clearly manipulated to present more defense propaganda than an accurate picture of true justice.
  3. Team Foxcatcher Rating: 7.3/10 – ‎3,450 votes The incredible true story of John Eleuthère du Pont’s delusional obsession with the sport of wrestling that ultimately led to the tragic death of Olympic & World wrestling champion Dave Schultz. Du Pont became the first member of the Forbes 400 richest Americans to be convicted of murder.
  4. West of Memphis Effectively the 4th film in the Paradise Lost series – this time directed jointly by Peter Jackson & Damien Echols himself. The film focuses on an alternative suspect in Terry Hobbs – whose step son was one of the victims of the notorious & now still unsolved 1993 murders.

West of Memphis brought Hollywood A-list directorial talent to this true crime classic.
  5. Tabloid The story of Joyce McKinney & her alleged kidnapping & rape of a Mormon missionary had the British tabloids feasting on every lurid detail back in 1977 & this documentary chronicles this most peculiar affair in detail. McKinney would later sue the makers of this documentary – unsuccessfully – for defamation.
  6. If A Tree Falls tells the story of the Earth Liberation Front who achieved infamy as a militant branch of the American environmentalist movement of the late 1990s & early 2000s.
