Why Boxing is the Past & MMA is the Future

The UFC was founded in November 1993 but remained a fringe, at first side-show embryonic barely recognized sport for the remainder of the 1990’s. In early 2001 the ailing organization was bought by casino moguls Frank & Lorenzo Fertitta upon the suggestion of long time friend Dana White.

The first five years of the Zuffa era was characterized by modest PPV numbers, heavy investment & significant financial losses for the organization. The tide was well and truly turned with the tremendous success of The Ultimate Fighter’s first series and the epic finale bout between Forrest Griffin & Stephan Bonner in particular.

In the last 15 years the UFC have become the most successful organization in the history of combat sport – raking in nearly 65 million Pay Per View buys; gaining wider cultural significance & having its fighters featured on everything from Ring Magazine & Saturday Night Live to Jimmy Kimmel.

The UFC have captured, among others, a slice of the disillusioned former boxing fan demographic who see the following advantages of the manner in which the sport is run to how boxing is taken to market in modern times:

  • Because the UFC is a single organization it is easier to make the best fights possible. Where boxing matches between the #1 & #2 ranked fighters in the world can take years to materialize – if they ever do – equivalent bouts in the UFC can be made regularly & as a matter of course.
  • in the UFC the product is the fight, not the individual fighters. Sure fans are drawn to certain personalities, but ultimately the competitiveness of the fights which is a function of the collision of two well-matched fighters determines the quality of the product.
  • there are far fewer – like 90-95% fewer – blatant mismatches in the UFC as there are in professional boxing. If you doubt that – a simple check of the betting odds for both sports should be enough to convince you.
  • Boxing attempts to make myths of men – inflating records by using a lack of defeats as proof of excellence – regardless of who these scripted wins came against. The UFC & MMA in general attempts to make legendary fights – fighters are judged more for the quality of their wins than for the lack of defeats they experience in pursuit of those victories.
  • Boxing has no standardized; legitimate drug testing. The UFC have the most advanced, purpose built doping programme in the world – at the cost of a reported $20 million. Whilst the uninitiated will point to failed drug tests in the UFC as proof that MMA is full of doped up meat-heads I point to the lack of a believable quantity of doping violations among major professional boxers as proof that there is a laughable lack of effective drug testing in professional boxing.
  • The various sanctioning bodies in boxing have rendered the concept of ‘world champion’ a joke & little more than a cheap marketing gimmick. As one example of this reality consider the following: Britain currently has 10 different professional world champions yet has only produced one amateur world champion in its entire history.
  • In boxing you have the chosen few & the starving masses – with no middle class to be found. In the UFC there is a vibrant, thriving middle class who earn enough to be comfortable yet still ambitious.
  • In boxing one loss can be the effective commercial end of one’s career. In MMA, a loss, depending on the circumstances under which it occurred can be a net good for your career.
  • A UFC PPV gets you 3 to 5 well matched bouts. A boxing PPV gets you one fight which may or may not be well matched which has been orchestrated by marketing first & sport second. The longer boxing can withhold a quality product, the higher a premium that product or the illusion of that product can fetch.
  • Whilst the vast majority of professional boxers stem from impoverished – often inner city – backgrounds mixed martial artists are generally derived from more educated backgrounds. Randy Couture (Oklahoma State University); Chuck Liddell (California Polytechnic State University); Rich Franklin (University of Cincinnati); Forrest Griffin (University of Georgia); Stephan Bonnar (Purdue University); Daniel Cormier (Oklahoma State University); Dan Henderson (Arizona State University/Cal State Fullerton); Miesha Tate (Central Washington University); Rashad Evans (Michigan State University) & Tito Ortiz (California State University) to name but a few are all the recipients of a tertiary education.
  • The Huffington Post noted in June 2015, “As MMA increases in popularity, boxing’s visibility in the national consciousness continues to fall.” And whilst boxing diehards may point to the financial success that was the long, long, long overdue Mayweather vs. Pacquiao – in reality it was a far bigger entertainment failure.
  • In one study of over 2,000 boxers & MMA fighters it was boxing who suffered a loss of consciousness or serious eye injury at a rate 69% higher than in mixed martial arts.
  • Boxing is the sport of punching. MMA is the sport of fighting – Striking: Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Kyokushin Karate, Taekwondo, Combat Sambo and Sanshou. The Clinch: Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, Judo, Sambo, Sanshou and Jujutsu & Muay Thai. The Ground game: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Sambo & Submission wrestling.
